Places in the vicinity of Palai Green:
Here are a few of our neighbours -- quiet, conservative, somewhat aloof but not unfriendly -- dwelling in the simplicity typical of their kind about 200 meters down the road from Palai Green.
Palai Beach
Here is the beach at Palai, a ten-minute walk down the road above from your bungalow.
Chalong Bay
Here we are looking northwest across Chalong Bay, Phuket's largest, from the same spot. Palai Green lies a short distance back of the trees lining the beach at center.
Seafood Restaurants
This Pran Talay one of several famous seafood restaurants situated on the strand at Palai, and less than a kilometer from your bungalow.
Fresh from the sea
Here is one who very probably would prefer to be a less tasty morsel: called 'kang' in Thai, it is known in English as the 'mantis shrimp' and is a little smaller than the crayfish.
Astrologer crabs
Beaches on Phuket are populated by species of small and remarkably agile crab, who during their spare time make little balls of sand in their dens and then, like Sisyphus, push them up, out and onto the beach, arranging them in patterns -- according to whim or settled plan, who can say? Some arrangements comprise tiny balls carefully laid out; some are informed by the same spirit as, say, the Dada movement in Modern Art -- rough, messy and evidently made in haste.
Personally, after considerable observation, I have concluded that their creations are somehow related to the patterns of stars that make up the Milky Way, and that they are really crustacean astronomers.

Mangroves
Phuket is famous for the beach but the east and south coasts are ringed by mangroves, which have a unique and complex ecology. The area shown is only a short walk from Palai Green, on the way to the beach. It is the usual haunt of water buffalo and frequently of migrating egrets, among other creatures.
Aside from scenic places, many services and recreational facilities are located within a three-kilometer radius of Palai Green. Below are some of those which, in our experience, those who come to live on the Green enjoy or depend on. Contact K. Nee at 66-81-892-4311 or email [email protected] for information about renting a fine new home at Palai Green.

Golf Course
Many live not for themselves but for the pleasure of going down a hole -- say rather 'holes', here referring to holes of golf. Just one kilometer from Palai green lies the beautiful new Phunaka Golf Course. Currently a nine-hole course, but with plans for expansion soon to an 18-hole course, Phunaka has a spectacular 330-yard, 56-bay driving range, golf academy and pro-shop. Green fees are 950 baht for nine holes and 1,600 baht for 18 holes. For members, fees are considerably less: one-year memberships result in green fees of just 500 baht for 18 holes; 10-year memberships in just 150 baht -- and memberships are still available. Caddy fees are 200 baht for 18 holes. Equipment rentals are 800 baht for a full set of clubs; 200 baht for golf shoes; and 100 baht for an umbrella. Rates for 40 balls on the driving range are 60 baht for non-members; 48 baht for members. The range was designed to simulate real course play, covering everything from short chips to full drives. The short game practice rate at the range is 100 baht for non-members; 80 baht for members. Phunaka is open both day and night.

Shopping and services
Home Pro Village is two kms from Palai Green -- a three-minute drive -- and provides international class goods and services to those living in the Chalong-Rawai areas. Anything you are likely to want in the of goods and services can be had within a 500-meter radius of Home Pro. Phuket's most competitive computer and equipment vendor, Banana IT, is located there, as well as its top market, Villa Market with the best selection by far of high quality meats and imported goods, including hard to find items such as organic eggs and pesticide-free produce.
The entertainment district
The 500-meter long strip leading to Chalong pier has turned into one of the island's most vibrant entertainment areas over the last few years.
Commercial boat and yacht harbour
Phuket's principal small craft harbour is Chalong Bay, considered by many the safest anchorage on the Kra Peninsula's west coast. It is also the departure point for most excursions to the islands off Phuket's south coast, most scuba diving boats and sport fishing tours. The pier itself is a popular jogging spot every evening, with hundreds of runners and strollers enjoying the promenade as the sun slowly -- but dramatically -- sets in the west.
Boats of all descriptions anchor in Chalong Harbour -- in fact, by law, every boat arriving in Phuket waters MUST anchor at Chalong for clearance. Thus the largest selection of boats in southern Thailand is available -- to take you around the outlying islands, to go scuba diving or fishing, or to sail around the world.
The 'View Point' above Khao Kad
High above Ao Yon Bay and Khao Kad Rd., comprehending Cape Panwa, Phuket town, Phuket's Deep Sea Port, the Phi Phi and many other Islands, and Koh Sirey in a 360-degree panorama, is Khao Kad View Point.
What makes Chalong Bay such a great anchorage is that it is enclosed by various islands and capes that divert the ocean's often wild winds and waves from boats riding serenely within their embrace -- as is well illustrated by this photo. To the right is Phrom Thep Cape; to the left, Koh Lone Island's southwestern point.
Where it's all at
The map below shows the location some of places mentioned on this page -- and some others of no less interest to specialists (viz. horseback riding and shooting).
